Overwhelmed by all the new beauty products that keep popping up on shelves? SELF magazine has done the dirty work for you, testing 1,443 new products with the help of 1,370 readers. Eighty-six products came out on top, earning mention in SELF's 10th annual Healthy Beauty Awards.

Each product was tested by nine different readers, who indicated their age, skin types and hair color and texture to receive samples of appropriate products, explained SELF beauty director Elaine D'Farley. Testers had a few weeks to try them out, rating them on a scale of 1 to 5 on scent, texture, ease of use, packaging and effectiveness.

Price points for products varied from boutique to drugstore. "You might have La Mer next to Neutregena next to Duane Reed's brand," D'Farley said.

While these weren't blind tests, D'Farley wasn't concerned with testers being swayed by brand loyalty.

"I think our readers are really results-oriented," D'Farley said. "They will vote on something that costs a dollar or something that costs $100."
