Make A Mark, a tween empowerment event, welcomed 150 tween girls and their moms this past Saturday, October 10, at its first annual event at the Pasadena Convention Center. Designed to educate and empower tween girls on healthy body image and self-esteem, Make A Mark inspired Los Angeles area girls between the ages of 9-14 through its motivational speaker, arts and crafts workshops, skincare workshop, and fashion show.

"The event was a great success, and we were able to reach so many girls," said Kelley Lee Gin, event founder and organizer. "Our goal with Make A Mark is to instill positive messages of self-confidence and healthy body image, and we definitely achieved that today. The feedback from the girls and their moms has been amazing, and I'm looking forward to next year."

"It was really nice that Make A Mark was aimed at both the tween and the mother. I've attended seminars for adult training and taken my daughters to educational events, but this is the first that focused on both," Carolyn Jew, Girl Scout Troop Leader - Troop 467-1 Monterey Park, who attended with her daughters and her troop. "I think it left a positive impact on the girls. Make A Mark encouraged them to strive, dream, achieve, and remember that there is support from friends and family."

The morning kicked off with a high-energy fashion show sponsored by Plum Denim and Jellypop Shoes featuring the latest trends modeled by fellow tweens.

Motivational speaker Jennifer Curtet rallied the girls to dream big, reminding them to determine their own destiny. The connection Jennifer made with the girls was evident in their rush to hug and be photographed with Jennifer after her speech.

Afterwards, the girls broke out into different workshops. The Sewing Studio taught them how to make handbags and how to choose the most flattering colors. Fleuretica showed how to construct bouquets of flowers of magnolias and tulips out of paper. And, Han's Beauty Studio demonstrated age-appropriate skin care maintenance.

Steven Lam Photography provided a photo booth to capture photos of the tweens and their mothers. These will be made available to guests to keep as memories of this fun and educational event.

Other sponsors included SIX7*8th magazine, Chica Circle, and Huntington Catering Company.

A percentage of proceeds will benefit Pajama Program and Hearts 4 Africa.
