Women's club plans holiday open house

TEMPLE TERRACE -- With the gift-giving season right around the corner, the Temple Terrace Junior Woman's Club is hosting an event to help shoppers get an early start.

It's the holiday open house from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Woodmont Clubhouse. More than 15 vendors will be on hand to offer up ideas and opportunities for attendees to purchase unique and useful presents for just about everyone on their lists.

All proceeds from the evening's sales will benefit the American Cancer Society's Temple Terrace Relay for Life, an annual spring fundraising event that honors survivors and memorializes those who've lost their lives to the disease.

Buyers may select from an assortment of handcrafted gold-plated, silver and fused-glass jewelry; makeup and skincare products; home decor pieces; scrapbooking items; personalized purses and tote bags; varied candles and baskets; books and wood art.

Bethany Mistretta of Lutz, a USBorne Books consultant, was sold on the company's interactive approach to capturing young readers' attention and the visual appeal of their brightly colored illustrations.

"We specialize in nonfiction books, and a lot of them are geared for the easily distracted child," she said. "In addition, 80 percent of them are $10 or less."

Temple Terrace resident Elisa Schwartz, a Thirty-One consultant, will be there with handbags and totes for people of all ages, including children.

"When I first saw them I loved what I saw, and although I'm not really a sales person, I knew I could sell them," she said.

Cheryl Hendricks of Carrollwood plans to bring a selection of her handcrafted jewelry, including several colorful pendants and earrings she has made from fused glass. Nothing she sells is priced at more than $15.

"I like trying various applications and making seasonal items, and I'm definitely creative," said Hedricks, a cancer survivor who is also bent on doing whatever she can to help find a cure.

Club members will also have a booth from which they plan to sell their signature heritage ornaments and 50th anniversary cookbooks.

Chairwoman Coleen Garner said the event is primarily geared for women.

"We have not done an evening event like this before, but we're hoping it will attract a lot of people," said Garner, who said the open house was selected to replace the club's annual fall Shop 'n' Social, typically an all-day affair on a Saturday.

Jeannie Waterman, the longtime chairwoman of the Shop 'n' Social, is all for the club's new venture.

"Although people seemed enjoyed it (the Shop 'n' Social), there were always so many conflicting events going on at the same time," she said. "A two-hour evening event makes it a lot easier for vendors and for people to attend."
